Goldberg of Sylacauga

Lena Witt and Meyer Lewis Goldberg were married in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania around 1899 and moved to Sylacauga, Alabama where Meyer had established himself with the first retail store in town. The building where Goldberg Brothers company was from 1899 until 1974, still stands on South Broadway, now occupied by the Sherwin-Williams store.

Meyer Goldberg peddled his way from New York to Talladega, Alabama in around 1895. He was not originally named Goldberg. In Lithuania, the name had been MUSHKAT/MUSHZCAT/MUSCAT (spelling?). When he got off the boat, he was supposed to look up a cousin named Goldberg that had already gone to Talladega. He kept repeating the name and “lo and behold”, the name was slapped on him.

The 1900 Census lists Meyer living in a boarding house in Sylacauga. Lena and their first daughter, Ida (born c. 1899) are listed living in Talladega with Meyer’s brother, Chatzi.

Meyer’s father, Alexander never stayed in the South. He died in Baltimore.

Lots of data is now showing up on JewishGen and Ancestry. Was able to get marriage licenses from Philadelphia for most of the children.
